Paul Newman Dies…

Paul Newman has died of cancer at the age of 83. I never got to meet the man but several drivers I worked with at AAA of Fairfield County, Connecticut had talked about the service calls made to his house. Apparently he owned a Volkswagen for around town driving that wasn’t in the best of shape. Whenever I was stationed in Westport I always hoped I’d get to meet him… Now I never will.

Reggie ‘Reg’ Dunlop, Butch Cassidy, Fast Eddie Felson, the man could ACT. You will be missed, Paul, you most definitely will be missed.

Photography Contest

I’m sponsoring/running a photography contest over at the ‘Forums of Loathing’, the official forums for the game Kingdom of Loathing. Not too many entries yet since we just started but check it out, we usually get some very good pictures posted. If you’re a KoL player feel free to enter and win some groovy in-game stuff.

Good books piss me off…

Yes, I’m weird, I can’t help that. Bear with me here. Bad books last. granted really bad books get tossed across the room never to be finished but books that fit somewhere between that point and being a ‘good’ book can take days and sometimes, depending on HOW bad it is, as long as a week to read. That’s value for your time. I say time because I can’t afford books, they’re too damn expensive, I get the library to buy them (the librarians love me and never deny me a request!) and I just spend the time and gas to go get them. A sack of really good bad books (err…) can cover my reading needs for nearly a month!

Good books on the other hand are like Jelly Belly Jelly Beans, you open ‘em, blink, and they’re GONE! Good books keep me awake longer than is good for me. I find myself three inches from the page squinting and reading with one eye closed because I’m so tired if I try to read with both eyes the words just swim all over the page. I find myself reading the same paragraph and page over and over and not understanding a thing even on the fifth try. I wake up with my face planted in a book my glasses all askew and a crick in my neck. Good books can make you make more than one trip per week to the library!

Good books are bad for you!

Wait a damn minute…

How come ‘Trix are for kids’ and that poor rabbit gets tortured unmercifully but Toucan Sam gets all the freaking Fruit Loops he wants?!

Spammers are amusing…

…and stupid:

Has it really been seven years?

I remember the morning, waking up, wandering in here for a smoke and to check my email. I saw a usenet post that said someone had flown a plane into one of the WTC buildings. A joke? I raced to the TV to turn on CNN…

I remember sitting, watching, worried, emotions I can’t name or explain…

I saw them fall.

Take a moment and remember.

Are people THIS gullible?

I just got an offer from Fiji Water (not going to link to them) where they offer to deliver bottled water to my house on a reoccurring monthly basis. The cost? A 24-bottle case of .5 litre/500ml bottled water is… wait for it… $30. Thirty freaking dollars for 24 bottles of water. Amazingly enough that does include free UPS ground shipping.

Maybe if you lived in Alaska and were 150 miles from the nearest town this might be bargain enough to save you money but I can get FIVE cases of water from the local Winn-Dixie (it’s not bad water either!) and still have enough left over for gas out of that same $30.

The only thing Fiji’s got going for it? Square bottles, which I think are kinda neat and though I’ve seen them on TV all the time we don’t get square bottles down here in Florida. :(

The ‘good’ old days?

Damn…

Fay (remember her?) Update…

It looks (hopefully) like we’re going to dodge Ike. Yay! (sorry to whomever it hits!)

Just wanted to touch on Fay since the ‘after the fact’ stuff rarely makes the news and people are surely thinking “Well that’s over and done with…” when it’s not.

The St. Johns river is STILL, this long after Fay came and went, at or near record flood stage in places like Deland and Lake Harney. There are still houses full of water and people who’ve lost practically everything displaced by this ‘mild’ storm. It doesn’t go away just because the talking heads on TV have moved on to new topics.
