Vista Up Time Update

Still up and running without a reboot. One Thousand Three Hundred Thirteen Hours, Thirteen Minutes, Thirteen Seconds. Yes, that’s 1313:13:13 and yes, I’m geek enough to get up at 3:00 AM to take a screen shot of the moment.

Hawk (ya’ll Vista haters are doing something wrong…)

Is it right?

The Black Footed Ferret, North America’s only native ferret species, was, and for that matter still is, near extinction. Classified as endangered in the U.S. in 1967 the last known wild population was taken into captivity in 1985 after an accidental discovery. Now there’s a captive breeding program that helping the animal make an “astonishing comeback”.

My question is; the creature has been nearly extinct for going on a hundred year and the last wild population was removed from the wild more than twenty years ago. Is it RIGHT to reintroduce these animals into an ecology that’s had decades to evolve without their presence? Yes, they’re cute and adorable they also eat those silly prairie dogs and it’s mostly our fault (as it always is) they’re endangered. But is it right? The areas they lived in have had decades to change. What impact is bringing back a species going to have on those OTHER species living in the same space?

Is our playing God going to backfire? Are we going to do more damage with this program? Is it right?

They are cute though.

Earth Day.

Hawk (whatever)

Let’s take pictures of ourselves, NAKED!

The advent of digital cameras, highspeed internet connections and an apparent reduction in morals has led to a flood of pictures wending their way across the internet of girls/women in some rather risque poses… NOT that I’m complaining mind you. Whatever you do alone or with friends (and baby oil…) in the privacy of your own home, dorm, car… *cof* is up to you. I just wonder at the practicality of sharing these pictures with millions of people around the planet (again, I’m not complaining!). I’m sure some, maybe even a lot of them are “oops, I forgot to delete those!” or made public as revenge by ex friends or lovers but a quick perusal of Flickr’s search feature with the keywords of your choosing will, unless you’re really odd, result in hundreds, often thousands of erotic images. I’m still not complaining!

I am however waiting for this to bite someone in the ass (so to speak!):

“Senator Smith, can we have your reaction to the recently uncovered
image of your aide, posed naked, shaved, doing a handstand in front of a
Nazi flag and balancing a pint of what we hope is beer, on her crotch?”

It’s going to happen. You know it is. Someone’s going to be interviewing for a job and the interviewer’s going to pause and go clicking around their computer for a few minutes and then a big smile’s going to spread across their face as they ask “So, do you still trampoline naked?”

Hawk (nope, not complaining, really)

Vista 1000+ Hours Up Time

1006:24:50 One THOUSAND and six hours of continuous, non-rebooted up time out of Windows Vista Home Basic (SP1). I’m satisfied. Those people complaining about how horrible Vista is and how often it crashes, etc. They’re doing something wrong. Forty two days without a reboot. For a Windows OS that’s not bad at all. I certainly can’t complain about a thousand plus hours without a crash, lockup or ‘necessary’ reboot.

Hawk (Vista fan)

Three notes?!

What’s that sound?!

I hear it all the time. Usually in the morning but never when there’s a particular weather pattern happening.

It’s three notes that sound like a mix of Mourning Dove, coastal fog-horn, that ping of trucks reversing and something almost musical.

*bwong* *bwong* *bwong*

It’s always off the distance, never harsh or jarring…

What the hell is that noise?!

Hawk (not imagining it, really)

E.R. ends tomorrow…

Tomorrow, April 2nd 2009 the last episode of E.R. will air. Can you believe it’s been fifteen years? 332 episodes, 122 Emmy nominations, 22 wins. As much as M*A*S*H was this show’s been a part of my life for one hell of a long time.

I’d like to thank the producers and writers for creating some outstanding television.

Beyond that though, I’d like to thank them for the best death scene ever with dropping a helicopter on Dr. Romano. Very Peter Pan meets Wizard of Oz. Nobody deserved it more!

Three hours of E.R. stuff tomorrow evening and it’s all over.

I’m a bit sad about this.

Hawk (it hurts when I do this, Doctor)
